Drugs: Help and Referral  

Alcohol and drug users are worried and disarrayed

Montreal, August 9, 2016 — For loved ones of people addicted to drugs(including alcohol and medication), vacation time is rarely a moment of relaxation when they assist, sometimes powerlessly, to excess and without no one to turn to for help. Fortunately, there exist social and community-based resources like Drugs: Help and Referral, that can help psychotropic consumers and those who surround them find solutions. “Moreover, our data speak for themselves: almost 15,000 people have called on our information and help service in 2015-2016, bearing witness on the importance of this free and accessible service everywhere in Quebec”, indicated Mrs. Pierrette Gagné, Executive Director of Information and Referral Centre of Greater Montréal (IRCGM).   

One must note that it is the consumers, themselves, that have looked for help from the counsellors of Drugs: Help and Referral, in a great majority of cases (66%). Family members, friends, colleagues of consumers account for only 26% of callers. “We encourage closed ones of consumers to contact us for any information needed concerning abusive usage of alcohol and drugs or for finding social and community-based resources in their region that will help the addicted person ,” said Mrs. Hélène Hamel, coordinator of Drugs: Help and Referral and also the other specialized line managed by Gambling: Help and Referral.

Drugs: Help and Referral is a phone service offered freely to the Quebec population, in French and English, anonymous and confidential, 24 hours, 7 days a week. Twelve counsellors trained in addiction, mental health, in youth intervention or with a baccalaureate in a field like psychology, criminology, specialized education, answer to questions and give information on different psychotropic substances (alcohol, drugs and medication). The information exists for 24 years and has helped 613,463 people.

The Information Centre of Reference of Greater Montreal celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. It offers bilingual information and referral services by phone, on-line and by printed directories to citizens and social field counsellors of the Greater Montreal.
